There has always been this idea of listening to ones own gut when trying to navigate changes in life. I often times remember being in situations where I was unsure of my next step and when I felt that twinge in my belly I knew it was time to go the other way. Our bodies regularly feel things before our minds and this sixth sense can gently guide us in the right direction. Therefore, how we feel does indeed play a huge role in our decision making process. The gut instinct comes from our Solar Chakra that governs our intestines, kidneys, liver and stomach. Therefore, a blocked Solar Chakra can lead to ailments like anxiety, poor digestion, irritability, depression and even eating disorders. When we radiate positive and healthy energy from this space we often feel self confident and emotionally balanced. Bergamot happens to be a fabulous essential oil for those suffering from stress and fatigue. The citrusy sweet aroma begins to lift the dark cloud that typically sits over those feeling depressed. Bergamot essential oil also contains a sedative quality that can help relieve hyperactivity and a racing mind. Bergamot essential oil may give immense relief to those suffering from an upset stomach by easing strain placed on the intestines. Insomnia can be all too familiar for those with Solar Chakra blockages due to a fearful mentality but this particular essential oil offers a reprieve from sleepless nights. Try diffusing 5-10 drops at bedtime in a cool and dark room for anyone dealing with issues related to interrupted sleep patterns. When we aren’t able to sleep our bodies aren’t able to heal and repair. Balance is largely the most important aspect of our health and working through our Chakras will help to maintain homeostasis throughout our bodies and minds. Remember that self-discovery is quite a tumultuous journey but it is only through this process that we truly begin to know ourselves, both the good and the bad. This, my friends is what balance is all about: accepting opposites equally.

Increasing ones ability to connect with the creative forces in the world is quite important in leading a fulfilling and loving life. We can all benefit from creative activities like drawing, painting, dancing, writing, singing and many more forms of art. These practices will begin to encourage growth while renewing the spirit and deterring negative self-talk. Creativity is related directly to the Sacral Chakra. A healthy Sacral Chakra allows the flow of sensual expression. When the Sacral Chakra becomes blocked symptoms result in reproductive disorders and emotional imbalance. This particular Chakra happens to rest between the sex organs and is often times represented by the color yellow. A fabulous essential oil to aid in the healing of this second chakra is earthy Sandalwood. Sandalwood essential oil enables new cellular growth that can be helpful for those of all ages. It can be applied safely to children as well as the elderly, although it is always wise to dilute any essential oil when applying to someone for the first time. Sandalwood can be used to cure a variety of infections for it is a strong disinfectant and antiseptic agent. When taken internally or applied to the belly this oil can help to soothe the digestive tract and stomach. Sandalwood also brings immense relief to those suffering from urinary tract infections and ulcers. On an emotional level this essential oil has long been used to release pent up fear and anxiety from the mind. It is a powerful tonic for the nerves and it is also quite sedative in nature. The Chakra system is quite ancient and used today as a means by which people balance both internal and external ailments of the body and mind. The Chakras are described as subtle energetic fields located along the spine. Each is associated with emotions as well as physical expressions and colors. Today I will focus on the Root Chakra (Muladhara) located at the base of the spine or the sacrum. When first imagining the Root Chakra it is important to visualize the color red. This is said to be the area of the body where we hold issues from our childhood and/or the past, even past lives. This Chakra keeps us grounded to the earth’s energies but it is also where we release our bodily toxins and therefore extremely important in building a healthy immune system. Imbalances will result in restless leg syndrome, circulatory issues in the legs, depression and even autoimmune deficiencies. Adding root vegetables to your diet like carrot, potato and parsnip can help in healing an imbalanced Root Chakra. Ginger essential oil makes for a fabulous Root Chakra aid because it is also a root spice. Ginger roots itself into the soil in order to grow and flourish therefore it can be very healing for those looking to connect with the present moment. Any feelings of disconnect or aloofness will quickly vanish after an abdominal massage featuring Ginger essential oil. Always dilute Ginger essential oil in a vegetable oil before topical application because it can burn the skin. The essential oil can be used to make a wonderful tea as well. Add a few drops to milk and honey, simmer in a pot and sip slowly. You will feel the heat travel down your throat into your tummy where it will begin its work. I typically keep a spray bottle full of water and 10 drops of my favorite antibacterial oil on hand for cleaning counter tops and doorknobs. My laundry detergent has long been replaced with castile soap and the aroma of my choosing, perhaps something warming in the winter and something refreshing in the summer. I enjoy the versatility in using essential oils in my cleaning routine. If I feel down I might use an essential oil of citrus and if I am attempting to calm my nerves or my toddler’s tantrums I might look to a floral scent. It is very important to understand that certain essential oils when exposed to high temperatures can become quite dangerous. While it can be fun to cook and launder with essential oils it is also important to add the product before placing food on the grill and clothes in a high heat dryer. Always be sure and store your oils in a dark and cool spot so they don’t go rancid. If you’ve spilled an essential oil do not try and wipe it down the drain, instead mop it up with a cloth and toss into a garbage can so that the oil doesn’t end up in the water supply. When working with oils be sure that the room is well ventilated. Remember to dilute essential oils when applying to the skin in order to guard against skin sensitivity. Moreover, just focus on the idea that a little bit does indeed go a long way when it comes to essential oils. These concentrated liquids contain seriously potent components that have the ability to do harm if not used with caution. Have fun when exploring the world of essential oils but maintain a watchful eye at the same time. Be well!
As a mother of a toddler I am always turning to my essential oils for relief during times of temper tantrums or irritability. My little one would often times become upset when it came to that point in the evening when the lights needed to be turned off. He was happy as a clam taking his bath and reading stories but the dark was not a very comfortable place for him and he would fights us on bedtime repeatedly unless we left the light on for the duration of the night. This was not a very economical solution to his nighttime fear and so I decided to test out a few of my favorite essential oils on this particular situation. Before turning in for the night I would mist Liam’s bedding with Juniper Berry essential oil, a known kidney tonic this oil helps to dispel worries or frights related to the night. It has a lovely scent reminiscent of crisp fall evenings in the evergreen forests. Next I would place 2-3 drops of Clary Sage essential oil on his spine immediately after bath time and about 20 minutes before lights out. This particular oil encourages a sedative mindset and releases any anxiety or depression. This powerful combination was soon known around our home as Liam’s special sleep blend. The synergetic aroma wafted around his room and created a safe space in which he could fall asleep. Scents and smells are like memories, they carry a message and our bodies respond either positively or negatively to certain aromas. In this case Liam’s body responded with ease and comfort, a few stories later Liam was tucked in and on his way to dream land. Sleep is something we all need and lack of this element can bring on disease and illness quite quickly. If you know anyone suffering from insomnia or fears related to nighttime have them look into an application featuring Clary Sage and Juniper Berry essential oils. Beware of Clary Sage’s strongly sedative properties and never apply to an intoxicated individual. Please use caution when applying any and all essential oils to children, as you may not yet know how their bodies will react to the chosen oils. Swing by the spa for a fabulous back massage featuring these two essential oils and head into the infrared sauna after for a double dose of anxiety busting therapy. Just be prepared to take a long nap after you get home.
